South Orange has a population of approximately 17,000 residents and located less than 20 miles from New York City. It is one of only four villages in New Jersey and one of only a few communities in the United States to still use gas light illumination as streetlights.
South Orange Avenue is a bustling street lined with many restaurants, pubs, retail outlets and services, several of which include the word "gaslight" in their name, in reference to the village's street lights. The South Orange Station is located directly above South Orange Avenue in the center of the village, and residents enjoy a fast commute to Manhattan by train.
South Orange shares a school system with the neighboring town of Maplewood. There are several elementary schools in each community, as well as one middle school and one high school. South Orange is also home to the main campus of Seton Hall University.
